The Hidden Cost of Cape Town Traffic on Service Call-Outs

Why Travel Charges Don’t Cover Technician Time

Cape Town traffic has become part of daily life for anyone who works, commutes or relies on service providers in the city. From the M5 to the N1 and the R300, congestion slows everything down. Also including essential services like garage door and gate motor repairs.

And while companies like us charge a travel fee, many clients don’t realise that this fee only covers fuel and vehicle expenses. It does not include the significant amount of technician time lost while sitting in traffic.

Cape Town Traffic Adds Hours to Every Workday

Cape Town consistently ranks as one of the most congested cities in South Africa. Delays during:

  • Morning peak (6:30–9:00)

  • Midday congestion around industrial areas

  • Afternoon peak (15:00–18:00)

  • Seasonal holiday traffic

  • Accidents and any roadworks

Therefore, this means that a simple 20–30 minute job can require up to 90 minutes of travel each way.

Our tracking system shows the truth

According to our tracking data, our teams spend an average of 3 hours per day travelling between jobs. That’s three hours of productive time lost to congestion. Time we don’t bill to clients.

Why Travel Charges Don’t Cover Our Technician’s Time

Many people assume that the travel fee covers everything but in reality it covers only:

  • Fuel

  • Vehicle wear and tear

  • Mileage-based services and maintenance

It is not a labour fee and It does not cover our technician’s time.

We choose not to charge for the hours our team spends stuck in traffic, even though those hours could be billable. This keeps call-out rates fair and transparent.

We Charge Per Hour Not Part Thereof

To keep pricing consistent, our labour is billed:

Per hour
Not per 15 minute slots
And not from the time the technician leaves the office

The hourly rate starts only when the technician arrives on your premises.

This means all travel delays, including Cape Town’s unpredictable traffic, are absorbed by us, not added to your invoice.

What You’re Really Paying For: Skill, Training and Experience

When you hire a technician, you’re not paying for an hour of time — you’re paying for:

  • Years of hands-on experience
  • Expert fault-finding abilities
  • Certified training
  • Specialist tools and equipment
  • Accurate diagnostics
  • Safety-compliant workmanship
  • Faster problem resolution

A trained, experienced technician can complete in 30 minutes what an unqualified worker might take hours to diagnose incorrectly. This saves costs long term and reduces call backs.

How Traffic Impacts Daily Scheduling

Because our teams spend around 3 hours per day on the road, this affects:

  • Same day appointment availability

  • Arrival time

  • Emergency response times

  • Job sequencing across different suburbs

  • Completion rates per day

Despite these challenges, we continue to optimise routes to keep travel times as short as possible. Cape Town traffic is unavoidable but we ensure our clients are not charged for the hours our technicians lose on the road.

Why We Don’t Bill for Travel Time Even Though We Could

We could charge for the time from when the technician leaves their previous job to when they arrive at yours. But that would significantly increase the service costs.

Instead, we’ve chosen to do fairer charging.

Travel fee covers only vehicle costs
Labour begins only on arrival
Clients pay for expertise, not traffic
No extra fees for travel time lost

This approach keeps our pricing transparent and competitive while respecting our client’s budgets.
